KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak may be thousands of kilometres away from home, but it appears that his interaction with a group of his Twitter followers here last weekend still lingers on his mind.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak may be thousands of kilometres away from home, but it appears that his interaction with a group of his Twitter followers here last weekend still lingers on his mind.

In his latest blog posting, Najib related his pleasure of meeting his social media friends, especially his 500,000th Twitter follower — student Anwaruddin Izzuddin, 15, from Hartamas — at the Chawan restaurant in Bangsar over breakfast.

“We discussed all sorts of things over nasi lemak, ubi kayu rebus and telur separuh masak. We talked about Malaysia, football and food — including how ubi kayu became a staple food during the Japanese occupation,” he wrote on his blogsite www.1Malaysia.com.my.

The prime minister is currently on a four-day working visit to New York after concluding a visit to the United Kingdom where he, among others, attended a reception hosted by heir to the British throne, Prince Charles, in conjunction with the granting of the Royal Charter Award to the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.

Najib observed that his breakfast companions had all the best traits of the upcoming generation of Malaysians, “with their sense of optimism and their determination to make the most of the peace and prosperity we enjoy in our country”.

Referring to Anwaruddin, Najib said: “He shared with me his passion for mountain biking, and asked me how I maintain a healthy lifestyle. I told him that I have a fitness regime that I apply, and I even do some exercises when travelling, including during my flights!

“It was encouraging to hear how important sports is to his life. I hope that this passion is shared by many of his fellow students.”

The prime minister said the ‘offline breakfast’ was overall a pleasurable meet up” and that he was looking forward to engaging further with his social media friends, online or offline.

“It was particularly significant for me as I hit one million Facebook ‘likes’ two days before the breakfast,” he added.

Najib said as someone who valued social media engagement as an important way to connect with the rakyat, he was grateful for the continued support and feedback, and invited ideas for future initiatives to be posted either in the blog comments or on Twitter and Facebook.

Earlier today, he tweeted a message wishing all teachers in Malaysia a ‘Happy Teachers Day’ as he encouraged them to persevere in promoting education in the country.

LONDON, May 14 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak Monday launched the ‘Friends of Barisan Nasional UK’ (FBNUK) which will actively seek to promote closer ties with the United Kingdom and disseminate reliable, timely and accurate information to the Malaysian diaspora in this country.

He said he hoped that the unique group could address these issues.

“A lot has changed over the last few years, and we want to make sure you get to hear about it. Our economy has been liberalised, creating jobs and increasing the wealth of ordinary Malaysians,” said Najib, who arrived here this morning with his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, for a two-day working visit.

His message to Malaysians in the UK was, “please connect more closely with Malaysia and play a bigger role in our national development, either by returning home or – less ambitiously but no less importantly – by sharing your considerable expertise with our national institutions from your base in Britain”.

“There’s room under the Malaysian sun for all our countrymen and women whoever they are and however they choose to contribute. Everyone has a part to play, everyone can make a difference and everyone can grow and prosper,” he said when launching the FBNUK at the House of Lords, here.

Besides Rosmah, present at the event were Malaysian High Commissioner to the UK Datuk Seri Zakaria Sulong and wife Datin Hazizah Zakaria, as well as a number of British public figures such as Lord Howell of Guildford and Lord Sheikh of Cornhill.

Addressing over 100 people at the launch, Najib said: “We’re still a young nation and the journey ahead is an exciting one, so I urge you, keep abreast of what’s happening at home and be ready to step up and play your part.”

The prime minister said he had previously mentioned that the era of ‘government knows best’ was well and truly over.

“The most important job of the government today is not just to listen but to truly hear the people’s voice…and that means yours as well,” he said.

Najib said that government services in Malaysia had been revolutionised, including improving education, developing rural infrastructure, expanding public transport, reducing poverty, cutting crime and corruption, and bringing down the cost of living.

Malaysia has also unveiled the most significant package of political reforms since its independence, he said, pointing out to the repeal of outdated security laws, implementation of new measures to enhance media freedoms and taking a range of important steps to clean up elections.

Last month, Parliament passed the Printing Presses and Publications (Amendment) Bill 2012 aimed at removing the ‘absolute power’ of the minister in passing or rejecting the licence for printing presses and also voted to repeal the Internal Security Act (ISA), among others.

Najib also touched on the brutal assault of Malaysian student Ashraf Haziq Rossli during the riots that rocked Britain last year.

“But we (Malaysians) were touched when, in the aftermath, thousands upon thousands of Britons expressed first their anger at the mob and then their heartfelt concern and support for Ashraf.

“And I would like to express my gratitude to everyone in Britain who reached out to this young Malaysian in his hour of need,” he said.

“The incident was proof, as if any were needed, that Britain and Malaysia are united in our values — but we’re equally united in our commitment to increasing prosperity, raising living standards and building open, outward-facing economies,” Najib said.

The prime minister drew the attention of his audience to the fact that ever since the East India Company first set up its regional base in Penang more than 200 years ago, Malaysia’s trade links with the UK had been strong.

“And they’re getting stronger, with Prime Minister (David) Cameron’s visit to our country last month putting an end, in his words, to the era of ‘benign neglect’,” he said.

Najib also mentioned the many legacies from Britain to Malaysia and highlighted the remarks made by Malaysia’s first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman back then that the “rulers had departed and returned to Malaysia not just as friends but as the best of friends”.

And this, said Najib, was certainly true as Britain stood to this day as a great friend to Malaysia.

Also in attendance were FBNUK president and Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute (ASLI) chief executive officer Datuk Dr Michael Yeoh, AirAsia group chief executive officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and Lim Kok Wing University president Tan Sri Lim Kok Wing.

KUALA LUMPUR: Anwaruddin Izzuddin, 15, the 500,000th Twitter follower of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, and three other lucky followers had the honour of having breakfast with the Prime Minister yesterday.

The other three were Lim Weng Marc, Shashi Muniandy and Mohd Azhar Hashim.

They also brought along a guest each.

Najib spent about an hour with his guests as all of them enjoyed nasi lemak, hard boiled eggs and teh tarik.

The Prime Minister also talked on a wide scope of topics, ranging from politics to elections and everyday life, and signed autographs.

Anwaruddin told reporters later he was thrilled when told that he was the 500,000th follower.

He described the prime minister as an “easy-going and very cool person” for someone his age.

“We also talked about Manchester United. He told us that he had always wanted to go to Old Trafford to watch an MU match but never got the chance,” he said.

Lim Weng Marc, 24, said the opportunity allowed him to get to know the Prime Minister better and to learn more about his work.

“He talked to us about his efforts to improve the country and we can see that he is really passionate and sincere about his work.

Sashi, a 26-year-old teacher, said they had asked Najib when the general election would be called and he indicated that it would be very soon.

“Najib said he would sleep less than five hours but lately has been sleeping less,” he said, adding that he had been following him on Twitter since Sept 22, 2008.

Najib has a current following of 576,717 Twitter followers. His Facebook page has hit over a million “likes” already.

Meanwhile, Najib also wished all mothers a happy Mothers Day and gave special recognition to working mothers, especially the young ones.

Najib, who is also acting Women, Family and Community Development Minister, posted on Facebook that young working mothers should be given due recognition.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) — United States President Barack Obama’s former chief blogger Sam Graham-Felsen has praised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s efforts in hosting hi-tea and breakfast for his Internet friends as part of a renewed approach to reach out to various communities in the country.

Graham-Felsen, who served as Obama’s chief blogger during the 2008 presidential election, said the president had also used quite the same approach in “Dinner with Barack”.

“The dinner was the best opportunity for ordinary people to share their experience with the president and I think it (hosting hi-tea and breakfast) is a wonderful thing to do,” he told reporters after delivering a luncheon talk entitled “From a Click to a Movement: How Social Media is Changing Your Organisation and the World”, here Saturday.

The talk was organised by Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (Angkasa) in conjunction with the International Year of Cooperatives 2012.

Graham-Felsen was asked to comment on the breakfast hosted by Najib for his four Twitter followers at Chawan Restaurant in Bangsar here today.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 (Bernama) — Anwaruddin Izzuddin, 15, the 500,000th Twitter follower of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, and three other lucky followers today got the chance of a lifetime of having breakfast with the prime minister.

The other three were Lim Weng Marc, Shashi Muniandy and Mohd Azhar Hashim. They also brought along a guest each to the breakfast at Chawan Restaurant in Bangsar here.

Najib spent about an hour with his guests as all of them enjoyed the favourite Malaysian breakfast of ‘nasi lemak’, hard boiled eggs and ‘teh tarik’.

The prime minister also chatted with his guests on a wide scope of topics, ranging from politics to elections and everyday life, and signed autographs.

Anwaruddin told reporters later he was thrilled when informed that he was the 500,000th follower of Najib’s Twitter.

“But when I got a call from the 1Malaysia.com a week ago to inform me about the news and to attend the event, I thought it was a prank. I could not believe that I would have a chance to sit and have breakfast with the prime minister,” he said.

He said he became a follower of @NajibRazak after being informed by his brother that the prime minister was holding a contest to meet the 500,000th follower.

The SMK Sri Hartamas student also described the prime minister as an “easy going and very cool person” for someone his age.

“We also talked about Manchester United. He told us that he had always wanted to go to Old Trafford to watch an MU match but has never got a chance to go,” he said.

Lim Weng Marc, 24, said the breakfast opportunity allowed him to get to know the prime minister better and to learn more about his work.

“He talked to us about his efforts to improve the country and we can see that he is really passionate and sincere about his work.

He said they also asked Najib when the general election would be called, but added that the prime minister would not reveal anything.

Lim had brought along his mother, Juliana Oo, 60, who said it was the best Mother’s Day gift she had ever received. Mother’s Day is tomorrow.
