The price of oil in Malaysia should not be in accordance with the world oil prices. We are producers and we should be the one to set the price of our oil, not follow global price. Only countries that do not produce oil and have to import oil use global oil prices. Is Malaysia a country that imports oil from other countries? If so, then what is the purpose of PETRONAS?

The fact is that even though we are an oil producing country, our domestic demand is nearly as much as the oil we export. We are therefore a marginal net exporter.

Secondly, we must realize that our oil is more suitable for the international market. For the type of petroleum products we use in our country, we need to process more suitable oil derived from countries such as the Middle East. We have to therefore import from these countries.

Apart from that, for every litre of petroleum products we produce, including LPG and diesel, the Government makes a significant contribution to the Rakyat of Malaysia through the amount of subsidy given of more than RM2 billion per month currently. RON95 for example, is being subsidised RM0.82 sen per litre. This means, if we pay RM1.90 per litre, we really should have been paying RM1.90 sen plus an additional RM0.82. And if we equate that to a full tank of about 25 litres, this means we will save between RM25 and RM30 every time we fill our tank full. This is the actual savings we gain that we sometimes don’t realise.

To add on, oil prices in Malaysia is among the lowest in the world. In Southeast Asia, our country has the lowest price apart from Brunei Darussalam. The Government has chosen a prudent policy and in addition we are not able to impose or give out subsidies that are too high because we want to use the wealth of our oil to contribute to the development of our economy.

If we use all our wealth to subsidize oil, it only increases our consumption. If we increase consumption, we are not building productive assets for the future of our country. Oil will definitely extinct one day, there will be lesser oil produced, and at that moment, we will be faced with a very tough situation. And this is why we must use our oil resources not only for the short-term interests but also for the long-term interests of our country. 

The Rumah Pertamaku scheme has been launched but why is it so difficult to get a loan suitable to the income of Malaysians? As property prices continue to increase, it seems like those who have just started a family will have to go on renting without being able to buy a house as there is no control by the government on the prices of property. Houses built these days are priced only for the rich. Please prioritise the people first.

The Government recognizes that home ownership is a necessity to the Rakyat. In the context of a rapidly growing economy, the price of land and property is expected to increase continually due to economic pressure. Had the Government not intervene in the economy, the prices of property would have continued to soar higher.

The Government has taken two steps in its intention to expand home ownership among the Rakyat, not only among the poor but also for the middle and low-medium income. Firstly, we want to control demand in terms of reducing speculative pressure. Among the steps already taken by the Government via Bank Negara and Ministry of Finance, are to re-introduce the Real Property Gains Tax, imposing certain requirements for those buying second homes and the increase of deposit.

That is in terms of the demand side, next we must also look into the supply side, that is, the supply of homes. The supply of homes must also be increased and this we have done through the Projek Perumahan Rakyat, among others. This is for the low-income group and we also have formed a new corporation, PR1MA, the 1Malaysia Housing Project, where the target market are those earning RM5,000 and below. The intention through this corporation is for the government to build more houses priced at RM350,000 range or at a maximum of RM400,000 and below, and we will be able to sell these to the low-medium income group.

In addition, as an additional step, the Government has also set a new policy for those who meet the conditions, i.e those who want to own their first home and earns an income of RM5,000 and below. They do not have to pay upfront money in other words, they can get 100% loans from financial institutions. This is a step that I believe will help a lot of people to own their own homes.

Bagaimanakah hubungan Dato’ Sri dengan Allahyarham Ayahanda Tun Razak dahulu?

Ya saya lihat bahawa masa saya bersama-sama dengan Allahyarham ayahanda saya, pada masa itu cara Allahyarham mengadakan hubungan dengan kami sebagai anak-anaknya agak berbeza dengan keadaan hari ini sebab pada masa itu sikap generasi terdahulu tu berbeza dengan generasi hari ini.

Saya lihat pada masa itu ada rasa segan dan sangat menghormati bapak… emak bapak dan kalau kita nak buat sesuatu, nak beri satu pandangan pun kita pikir banyak kali sebab kita tak boleh merasakan bahawa sesuatu yang kita kata itu boleh… mungkin boleh mendatangkan satu perasaan tidak senang kepada ayahanda saya pada ketika itu.

Tapi ini bukan bererti bahawa tidak ada rasa kasih sayang yang mendalam, memang ada. Dan saya masih ingat lagi waktu saya belajar di luar negara kalau saya menulis surat masa itu tak ada emel dan tak ada sms, tak ada social media terpaksa tulis surat melalui aerogram dan kita tunggu jawapan daripada ayahanda saya dan walaupun ayahanda saya ketika itu sangat sibuk sebagai Perdana Menteri tetapi saya pasti dapat jawapan mungkin selang dua minggu ke tapi jawapan pasti tiba. Jadi perkara-perkara seperti inilah yang jadi ingatan yang manis pada saya dan juga bagaimana Allahyarham merupakan seorang motivator yang sangat halus sebenarnya menggalakkan kita untuk melakukan belajar bersungguh-sungguh supaya kita dapat pencapaian yang nombor satu ke… nombor dua ke… nombor tiga ke. Dan tiap-tiap bulan dia nak tahu apa pencapaian kita. Dan kita merasakan… saya sebut kita makna termasuk adik-beradik saya bahawa kita tak nak mengecewakan Allahyarham. Jadi kita pun cubalah sedaya upaya. Kalau dapat nombor satu kita tengok Allahyarham cukup riang… cukup apa nama… ceria mukanya tapi kalau kita tak dapat nombor satu, nombor tiga ke tentu dia rasa agak kecewa. Jadi dengan cara seperti ini beliau telah mendidik saya dan adik-adik saya supaya tidak… tidak terlalu manja, tidak terlalu mewah dalam kehidupan kita dan sentiasa mengamalkan cara hidup yang sederhana, bertimbang rasa dengan orang. Dan agak itulah mungkin sebab itulah mungkin saya mempunyai EQ dengan rakyat agaknya yang baik kerana didikan yang saya telah terima melalui Allahyarham ayahanda saya secara orang kata secara subtle tetapi kesannya besar kepada jiwa saya dan kepada perasaan saya.

Apakah perbezaan antara cara Dato’ Sri bergaul dan berkomunikasi dengan anak-anak berbanding dengan cara Allahyarham ayahanda Dato’ Sri dahulu?

Zaman sekarang ni dia lebih informal. Maknanya kita boleh melepak bersama, boleh… kadang-kadang boleh bergumpal bersama tapi rasa hormat tu tetap.. tetap ada, tetap tinggi tetapi lebih orang kata lebih informal daripada masa-masa yang lalu. Saya lihat hubungan saya dengan anakanda-anakanda saya pun lebih dalam bentuk dapat bertukar-tukar pendapat secara lebih terus terang dan tidak ada rasa ada gap, jurang antara kami tetapi mereka sedar bahawa mereka juga menghormati saya sebagai seorang ayah. Jadi ini memperlihatkan generational change bukan saja pada saya tapi pada keluarga secara umum di Malaysia ini.

Saya ingin mengucap Selamat Hari Bapa kepada semua bapa yang mana Hari Bapa ini merupakan satu hari di mana peranan seorang bapa itu perlulah diingati dan diapresiasikan oleh anak-anak mereka, oleh keluarga mereka kerana inilah satu ketika di mana kita harus mengenang jasa dan budi bapa kita. Jadi saya ingin mengucapkan Selamat Hari Bapa termasuk juga untuk mereka yang baru saja digelar sebagai seorang bapa. Ini bapa muda pun kita kena beri pengiktirafan atas sumbangan mereka yang mungkin kita kira sebagai potensi masa depan mereka membentuk generasi baru untuk menentukan kejayaan negara kita nanti, insyaAllah.

I answer Keith Ng’s comment on Facebook in regards to what the Government will provide for students who exemplified themselves.

Firstly, congratulations on all of you that did well in your SPM. This is the best results achieved in the last 4 years, with 9,239 students scoring straight As.

The Government recognises that all these students are deserving of financial support to pursue their higher education, which is why more and more government agencies and private sectors have come forward to provide scholarships and grants.

Last year I had announced that the Government will provide scholarships to all students who obtain 9A+ or more, regardless of ethnicity or creed. At the same time, other deserving students, whose socio-economic conditions may affect their SPM outcomes will also be provided assistance.

I myself have personally handed financial grants to over 300 outstanding SPM and STPM 2009 students, provided by 1MDB, so that they can pursue a brighter future.

However, I would like to point out that as we make our way forward towards a developed nation status, our economic pattern diversifies and deepens, thus calling for human capital possessing a greater variety of skills and knowledge. This means agencies and the private sector issuing scholarships must take heed to make an academic investment that will produce benefits beyond the next ten years. We must start now.

To Keith Ng, please extend my congratulations to your niece on her outstanding SPM performance, as well as her parents, and teachers who have guided her to achieve these results.

Mereka yang mempunyai kelulusan SPM perlu mencari jalan untuk mengambil kursus-kursus tambahan samada di kolej-kolej kemahiran dan vokasional ataupun mereka boleh bekerja di syarikat-syarikat yang akan memberi mereka latihan dalam bidang kemahiran tertentu.

Sebab kalau kita terus kekal dengan kelulusan SPM sahaja, ini tidak akan memberi kita peluang pekerjaan yang lebih lumayan. Tapi jika kita mempunyai kemahiran tertentu, dan kemahiran itu dipertingkatkan lagi, umpamanya dari level 1 ke level 2 ke level 3 bererti bahawa kita akan mendapat pendapatan yang lebih selesa.

Jadi saya ingin menggalakkan lebih ramai rakyat Malaysia lulusan SPM untuk mencari jalan tidak kira samada dalam kursus yang ditawarkan oleh pihak kerajaan ataupun pihak swasta. Tidak kira pada peringkat awal atau peringkat rendah, tapi jika mereka terus tekun berusaha, mereka pasti akan dapat mempertingkatkan kemahiran yang ada kepada peringkat yang lebih tinggi lagi.

Saya adalah antara ratusan ribu rakyat Malaysia yang kini bekerja di luar negara. Apakah strategi utama Talent Corp bagi meyakinkan kami agar kembali ke Malaysia untuk mencari untuk mencari rezeki dan mendapat kehidupan yang “selesa” seperti di luar negara.

Talent Corp telah memulakan tugasnya pada 1 Januari dan antara fokus Talent Corp adalah untuk berhubung dengan rakyat Malaysia yang sedang bertugas di luar negara, supaya mereka dapat mengetahui akan peluang yang ada di Malaysia terutama sekali berkaitan dengan Pelan Transformasi Ekonomi yang sedang kita laksanakan yang mana terdapat begitu banyak Entry Point Projects yang telah dan akan kita umumkan dari masa ke semasa. Tentu sekali ini menunjukkan peluang yang semakin banyak yang terdapat di Malaysia.

Selain daripada itu, dalam usaha kita untuk mentransformasikan negara sebagai sebuah negara berpendapatan tinggi, ini juga bererti bahawa pendapatan rakyat Malaysia juga akan bertambah pada masa-masa yang akan datang.

Jika kita lihat dari sudut keseluruhannya, saya yakin bahawa bekerja di Malaysia juga merupakan satu pilihan yang sangat baik. Selain daripada itu, kita akan cuba meyakinkan mereka yang belum lagi membuat keputusan samada untuk bekerja di Malaysia atau luar Negara supaya mereka memilih untuk bekerja di Malaysia.

Saya yakin dan percaya bahawa apabila ekonomi kita ini berkembang dengan lebih rancak lagi, kita akan dapati bahawa ramai rakyat Malaysia yang berada di luar negara akan berminat untuk pulang ke tanah air dan bekerja di Malaysia.
