I have always said that new media plays an important role in our political and civic future and that it is important for the truth to be told through responsible reporting. I was therefore interested to come across a new Bloggers' Code of Ethics that publishers may adopt.

Published on an internet news site, these guidelines are based on the US-based Society of Professional Journalists' code of ethics for bloggers. A small selection follows.

Bloggers should:

• Be honest and fair in gathering, reporting and interpreting information

• Never plagiarise

• Identify and link to sources whenever feasible

• Never publish information they know is inaccurate - and if publishing questionable information, make it clear it's in doubt

• Distinguish between advocacy, commentary and factual information

• Admit mistakes and correct them promptly

• Show good taste. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity

• Explain each blog's mission and invite dialogue with the public over its content and the bloggers' conduct

• Disclose conflicts of interest, affiliations, activities and personal agendas

• Abide by the same high standards to which they hold others

I find such standards critical to developing a respectful and productive dialogue, and will endeavour to adhere to them as best as I can. What are your thoughts on this code? Are there any best practices that you can think of that have not been included?

PL Fong: Integrity Has Become An Illusion - Part 2
. Immigration policies over the years have also scared away potential high income earners. Spouses of Professionals, majority of who are still renewing their Visas. Further our immigration authority tends to be racist when approving Visas, PR or others. At the end of the day, 22 years of administration under a sole PM has eroded the check & balance in this country. There were many Mega Projects but these were carried out at excessive cost. A whole generation is now made to suffer as a consequence of this. Should the current leadership has the political will to ensure that we do not make the same mistake and to safeguard the future of our nation, it is about time the law be amended to remove the immunity of Tun, only then can the population be assured that there will be no more abuses.

PL Fong: Integrity Has Become Illusive - Part 1
To my dear PM, although you may have added countless values but action speaks louder than words. For instance, our former PM, Tun M publicly commented that we should not sign lopsided trade agreements, on the other hand, the govt. signed lopsided agreements with toll operators and IPP. The PKA is only a tip of the iceberg. Anyway, there is not much point in crying over spilt milk. Malaysia is a nation rich in resources and were squandered away by the previous administration. In view of the resources that we possessed, Malaysia should now be a developed nation. Mega Projects in this country, although the idea is noble but the excessiveness had burnt the pockets of taxpayers. Today we have low disposable income today, high numbers of unskilled foreign labour, no thanks to the cosmetics of Mega Projects, not to mention the govt. protection of Proton had put a burden on taxpayers.

najib manaukau: najib manaukau
I just came back from some sort of a world tour.
I was amazed that all the Malaysian Embassies I came across
are using Jawi and English but not Bahasa Melayu outside the
embassies. Why is Jawi used instead of BM ?
Is it because only Malaysian Muslims are expected to used
the embassies and not the non Muslim Malaysians ?

Suzie: With Freedom comes Responsibility
Bloggers are not independent 'islands of opinion’ who voice out their thoughts to empty space, but rather people with far flung impact and a wide circle of supporters. Bloggers should utilize the Internet responsibly. Bloggers and their work are accountable to the acts and laws of the Malaysian Constitution. Instead of inciting unrest, distrust and disunity, bloggers have a communal and social responsibility to communicate values and uphold tenets of nation building. Just like responsible journalism, there must also be responsible blogging.

Kelvin: Blogs are not news channels.
Blogs were never intended to supplant professional news outlets. Blogs were supposed to be outlets for an individual to share and express oneself. But weaknesses in professional or traditional or mainstream reporting makes blogs the "alternative to mainstream" news outlet. So, to fix things, fix how mainstream news reporting is done. If people can be convinced that what they read in the newspaper is as accurate and comprehensive as it can be, blogs will become the domain of conspiracy theories and celebrity gossips. I've never relied on blogs (except blogs from reputable news organizations) for news because unlike a small minority of people, I like my news to be "certified" with a professional stamp.

Norzaidah Binti Mohd Feisal: Ketuanan Melayu

A'kum Dato' Sri...
