Our tourism sector enjoyed a successful 2009, despite the H1N1 outbreak and global economic crisis. Encouragingly, the number of foreign visitors coming to Malaysia last year was about 24 million, a rise of about 7% compared to 2008, and Malaysia won seven regional World Travel Awards. It was also encouraging to see our country feature in Lonely Planet's list of top 10 destinations to visit in 2010.
I believe that people visiting for the first time this year will like what they experience: a one Malaysia of different peoples, customs, traditions and languages, all united under one flag. Tourism Malaysia's Truly Asia tagline is truly fitting, therefore. Our rich cultural diversity means that we offer exciting gastronomic experiences, places of worship for all faiths, buildings intact from the pages of history in places such as George Town and Melaka, and festivals with unforgettable images.
As I have expressed earlier in my previous blogs and during several interviews, I am delighted with the number of interactions online that I have had with the public via my personal blog on 1malaysia.com.my, as well as Facebook and Twitter. Indeed, I am moved to interact further directly with my online fans and friends.
On Saturday 13 March 2010, I would like to host a tea party at my home specifically for my online friends for an interactive session. Although participation at this event will be limited, I intend for this to be the first of many sessions and events for us to meet and interact. There has been an overwhelming and encouraging amount of comments, likes and feedback and I thought that we could discuss and interact further on this at the event. The recent spate of attacks on our houses of worship tested all of our resolve as Malaysians. These shameful acts shook our nation and their profound impact was highlighted across the globe.
Encouragingly, voices are ringing loud and clear across Malaysia in condemnation of these incidents. I am moved and inspired by this. The chorus of disapproval and anger towards this handful of malicious individuals rippling throughout our land is a powerful demonstration of the true spirit of 1Malaysia, or unity in diversity.
As I write, many hundreds of thousands of Malaysian Indians, fellow Malaysians and foreign tourists will be descending on Batu Caves, thronging the streets of Penang and filling temples throughout Malaysia in celebration of Thaipusam, the great annual Hindu festival. I’m looking forward to join in the festivities tonight.
For Tamil devotees bearing the traditional burden of kavadi, it is an occasion of atonement and humility. For the curious-minded, it is a thrilling opportunity to learn about another culture and religious belief, and in doing so learn something about themselves. For all Malaysians, it is another chance to exhibit our appreciation for the cultural wealth we have long enjoyed as a nation, in the spirit of 1Malaysia.
Last year, I announced a comprehensive programme to significantly improve the efficiency of government and, by doing so, enhance the quality of lives of Malaysians.
Led by our Performance Management and Delivery Unit, or Pemandu, the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) is key to achieving Vision 2020 and a matter of great importance to me. Looking ahead at the next 12 months, I see 2010 as the year we implement what we have pledged to the people of Malaysia.
